Fees are charged at the beginning of each term (four times a year). Any payment of fees by cash, credit or eftpos payments can be paid at reception. Payment by direct debit can be arranged at reception.

All students must complete a new enrolment form each term.

All missed classes are still to be paid for. You can make up missed lessons if you are still enrolled, within the same school term, please see reception to organise these. Special discount packages are available for students wishing to enroll in more than one class. Please note these packages can only be used by one child only, not shared by the family.

Overview

Our reception is open 6am-8.30pm Monday-Thursday, 6am-8pm Friday and 7.45am-5pm Saturday. Our friendly receptionists will be able to answer any queries you may have.

STUDIO CALENDAR

Our studio holds fixed classes during standard school terms, programmed according to the present studio timetable. As such, there are no fixed classes held during the school holidays.

Classes are held as usual on student free days. Classes that fall on public holidays are not charged.

PERFORMANCES

In addition to our regular classes, we also offer a number of opportunities throughout the year for students to perform and challenge themselves. These include choreography competitions, workshops, fete performances and community performances.

ANNUAL CONCERT

The annual concert, “Stars on Stage’, is held at the end of the year. All students are encouraged to participate and demonstrate what they have learned throughout the year. Each class will usually perform one dance, with a costume to be purchased for each. There are two performances of the concert on the same day, with a theatre rehearsal usually held the day before.

EISTEDDFODS

Eisteddfods are competitions held at different venues around Brisbane. Eisteddfods are not compulsory but are a necessary part of the student’s growth. It instils team discipline, communication, self-confidence plus the kids love them!

There is a slight entry fee charged, as well as costume costs as required. All students will be needed for a one day holiday rehearsal.

Students interested in doing a solo, duo or trio at eisteddfods, please inform us when enrolling if you are interested so we can organise exact times to learn the routines.

EXAMINATIONS

Exams are greatly suggested for children as it gives them something to accomplish and work towards. Students will receive a report and a medal or trophy depending on the examination.

Participation in holiday classes is also expected with CSTD examinations usually held in October.

Classes

We offer classes for all ages, from toddlers through to adults, catering for all your dance and performing art needs. Our discount packages keep the cost affordable. Please review our classes and contact us to help you with your selection.

All classes are open for parent viewing with set areas you can sit and watch your child. We do ask that noise is kept to a minimum and any siblings are kept entertained so the students get the most out of their tuition. Parent viewing is not permitted in Term 4 (excluding Mummy & Me and Preschool) when we are working towards our end of year concert.

Class Descriptions

Mummy & Me

30 min class designed for children aged 18 months to 3 years. Combines creative movement, dance and play, using music, dance steps, fun props and toys to stimulate movement. Storytelling and sing-alongs will also be included. Mums and/or Dads too will dance, play and assist their children, interacting along with the other children and parents. A fun way to be a part of your child's early years of motor skill development through the joy of dancing. A great way to meet new friends as well!

Dress requirements: any exercise appropriate clothing or dance wear (tutus or other dress ups are welcome!) No shoes needed. Hair off the face.

Preschool

45 min class designed for children aged 3 and 4. This is the next step up from Mummy & Me, children participate on their own without Mum or Dad. Building on the skills learnt in Mummy & Me it combines the foundations of ballet, jazz and tap while still using storytelling and sing-alongs to encourage creativity. This is a great class to promote independence and build confidence through movement.

Dress requirements: any exercise appropriate clothing or dance wear (tutus or other dress ups are welcome!) Girls: pink ballet shoes and tan tap shoes. Hair in bun or off face. Boys: black jazz shoes and black lace up tap shoes.

Tinies

60 min class designed for children aged 5 to 7. The class combines jazz, tap and ballet. This class starts to focus on the technique of dance and children have the option to sit for C.S.T.D exams.

Dress requirements: Girls: Westside Dance Mini Leotard with Skirt, ballet tights or ballet socks, black jazz shoes (pink ballet shoes can be worn in class but jazz shoes are required for performances) and tan tap shoes. Hair in slicked neat bun. Boys: Westside Dance Active Short and Singlet, white ballet socks, black jazz shoes and black lace up tap shoes.

Jazz

60 min classes designed for ages 8 to 12. Students will learn turns, kicks, and leap steps along with popular simple rhythm techniques, stretching and fun expression. We use fun, popular and age appropriate music. Students are given the opportunity to sit exams through C.S.T.D.

Dress requirements: Any combination of Westside Dance X Strap Leotard, Racer Back Crop, Performance Short or Performance Legging. Black jazz shoes. Hair tied back and off face. Boys: Westside Dance Active Short and Singlet and black jazz shoes.

Tap

60 min classes designed for ages 8 to 12. Tap classes are the quickest way to develop coordination and rhythmic ability. Tap is highly recommended for all dancers who desire to have a well-rounded base of knowledge! Students are given the opportunity to sit exams through C.S.T.D.

Dress requirements: Any combination of Westside Dance X Strap Leotard, Racer Back Crop, Performance Short or Performance Legging. Tan tap shoes (Pre Tap – Grade 3) black lace up tap shoes (Grade 4 and above). Hair tied back and off face. Boys: Westside Dance Active Short and Singlet and black lace up tap shoes.

Ballet

60 min class designed for ages 8 to 12. Classical ballet provides a great foundation for all other dance styles and is the ultimate when it comes to the control of your body. It helps to improve posture, muscle tone, flexibility and core strength. Each class starts with exercises at the barre and then will progress to the centre. Students are given the opportunity to sit for exams through C.S.T.D

Dress requirements: Westside Dance X Strap Leotard, ballet tights and pink ballet shoes. Hair in slicked neat bun. Boys: Westside Dance Active Short and Singlet, white socks and white ballet shoes.

Contemporary

60 min class designed for ages 8 to 12. It combines modern technique with a free form of movement and theme. It is filled with very technical dance moves that are very visual and fun to perform and watch. It is an ever-changing style of dance that continues to evolve and keeps us wanting more.

Dress requirements: Girls: Any combination of Westside Dance X Strap Leotard, Racer Back Crop, Performance Short or Performance Legging. Foot undies or bare feet are acceptable. Hair tied back and off face. Boys: Westside Dance Active Short and Singlet. Foot undies or bare feet are acceptable.

Hip Hop

60 min class designed for ages 8 to 12. One of the most popular and familiar forms of stylised dance. Television and movies utilise the free, rhythmic and fun tones of hip hop dance. In these classes we teach stylised technique along with popular hip hop moves. It also gives the dancer knowledge in coordination, physical strength and promotes self-confidence.

Dress requirements: any exercise appropriate clothing or dance wear and street shoes. (Loose clothing acceptable!)

Breakdance

60 min class designed for ages 8 to 12. Coordination, style, flexibility, and rhythm are the keys to successful breakdancing. It is one of the most improvisational dance styles, allowing for each dancer to customise his or her routine with athleticism and imagination. However, since many dancers have created moves that borrow from gymnastics and martial arts, you develop a lot of upper body strength

Dress requirements: any exercise appropriate clothing or dance wear and street shoes. (Loose clothing acceptable!)

Musical Theatre

60 min class designed for ages 8 to 12. Very fun and popular for the dancer who loves to be on stage. We use Broadway themed songs along with plays and concepts as you see on Broadway or local theatres. Jazz technique, stylization, expression is also taught in this class which enhances their dance education and future theatre opportunities.

Dress requirements: any exercise appropriate clothing or dance wear. Street shoes or jazz shoes acceptable. Hair off face.

Acrobatics

60 min class designed for ages 8 to 12. It combines classical dance technique with precision acrobatic elements. It is defined by its athletic character, its unique choreography, which seamlessly blends dance and acrobatics, and its use of acrobatics in a dance context. It is a popular dance style and an especially challenging dance style for dancers as it requires them to be trained in both dance and acrobatic skills.

Dress requirements: Any combination of Westside Dance X Strap Leotard, Racer Back Crop, Performance Short or Performance Legging. Bare feet are acceptable. Hair tied back and off face. Boys: Westside Dance Active Short and Singlet. Bare feet are acceptable.

Adult Classes

60 min classes designed for beginner to advanced grown-ups! Currently we offer classes in tap. These classes are great for adults who have never danced before or haven’t put on their dancing shoes for a few years. It won’t be long and you will be burning up the dance floor!

Dress requirements: any exercise appropriate clothing or dance wear and black lace up tap shoes.

Teachers

Westside Dance YMCA offers a wide range of classes across all areas of dance. Our teachers are all skilled dancers with numerous qualifications and personal accomplishments.

Sarah Grealy

Sarah is the Dance Coordinator and teaches a variety of classes at Westside Dance YMCA. Sarah established the studio in January 2017 after teaching for 18 years at various studios across Brisbane and surrounding areas. She holds a Bachelor of Entertainment Industries majoring in Dance and Entertainment from the Queensland University of Technology. Sarah has had 29 years’ experience with the CSTD syllabus and has completed her major examination levels in ballet, jazz, theatrical and tap.

Sarah has also organised and choreographed dance performances for the YMCA Rat Race which was covered by Channel 7 and will be working on Ipswich Festival’s Street Party and Media Launch later this year. She has a huge passion for the arts which she loves to share with younger generations. Sarah believes in encouraging all students to unleash their inner creative spirit within fun, engaging yet quality dance tuition.

Phoebe Hilton

Phoebe has dancing since she was eight when she started at Dance Force Stanthorpe in the RAD syllabus and moved to The Ritz Performing Arts Centre Stanthorpe when she was 15. During her time at The Ritz she received Honours in CSTD Jazz 5 & 6, Tap Advanced Bronze and Ballet Sub-Elementary, and Highly Commended in Ballet Elementary. Phoebe graduated from the Queensland University of Technology in 2017 with a Bachelor of Creative Industries, Dance major with Distinction. She completed an internship at Promenade Dance Studio where she was a teaching assistant leading up to their students taking exams in the RAD Syllabus.

In 2016 Phoebe worked with four other dancers to organise a story based routine for Cromwell College to compete against the other UQ colleges where she choreographed and designed everything down to casting roles, lighting, and costumes and hair/makeup. In 2017 she performed in Brisbane Festival in a production produced by Brisbane’s The Good Room and danced at Sanctuary Cove Film Festival. This year she will be part of Mad Dance House’s part time course and running dance classes for the residents of Burnie Brae Respite Centre at various times throughout the year.

Stephanie Sharp

Stephanie first began dancing at the age of two years old. In 2017 she completed her Certificate IV in Dance and she is now currently completing her Diploma in Dance (Elite Performance) at Dynamite Studios Academy on the Gold Coast. While completing her Diploma she studies jazz, ballet, tap, hip hop, contemporary, lyrical and musical theatre. Stephanie has completed CSTD Jazz and Tap examinations and RAD Ballet examinations. She has many years of performance experience by competing in several eisteddfods and competitions each year and has been doing so for nine years now.

In 2016 she was a part of Harvest Rain's production of Hairspray the Big Fat Arena Spectacular and in 2017 Stephanie was cast as an ensemble member for Harvest Rain's production of Grease the Arena Experience. She also has experience in suit character work playing characters such as Paw Patrol, Ninja Turtles, Trolls and Smurfs. Stephanie is passionate about all aspects of dance and she loves sharing her knowledge of the dance industry to younger students.

O’Shan Shibasaki

O’shan has been dancing for five years. He is Westside Dance’s resident Break Dance and Hip Hop teacher. He has performed competitively in crew choreography competitions such as World of Dance, Bring It On, Battle Grounds, Hip Hop International, and more. O’shan currently dedicates his dance training towards Break Dancing and is a part of an underground crew called Bneazy. O’shan has been teaching for a year and half and his main goal is to push students to their limit to reach their full potential, so they can apply this to anything in life.
